Wood types & materials

Why the choice of wood is so important

Not all wood is created equal. Each species has its own distinctive characteristics: color, grain, hardness, workability, and durability. These properties influence not only the aesthetics of the finished work of art, but also the entire creative process.

I carefully select the wood for each project – often a special piece of material inspires me to create a new sculpture.

American walnut (Juglans nigra)

Characteristics:

  • Deep brown to black-brown color with elegant grain
  • Medium-weight, stable hardwood
  • Excellent machinability
  • Develops a noble patina over time

Why I love walnut:
American walnut is the epitome of elegance and warmth. Its dark, rich color lends sculptures a special depth and refined aura. The expressive grain is particularly emphasized by my surface treatment.

Ideal for:
Abstract sculptures, figurative art, elegant wall objects

Oak (Quercus)

Characteristics:

  • Light to medium brown color
  • Very hard, robust wood
  • Characteristic grain with striking annual rings
  • Extremely durable and resistant

Why I love oak:
Oak represents strength, durability, and tradition. The wood's distinctive structure makes each sculpture unique and possesses a strong presence. Oak is unforgiving—it demands respect and precise craftsmanship.

Ideal for:
Nature-inspired sculptures, rustic artwork, massive wall sculptures

Cherry tree (Prunus avium)

Characteristics:

  • Warm, reddish-brown color
  • Medium-hard strength
  • Fine, even grain
  • Darkens beautifully and develops golden tones

Why I love cherry tree:
Cherry wood enchants with its warm, inviting aura. The reddish nuances create a cozy atmosphere and bring artwork to life. Over time, the color becomes even more intense and refined.

Ideal for:
Wooden clocks, delicate sculptures, wall art, decorative objects

Beech (Fagus sylvatica)

Characteristics:

  • Light, reddish-white color
  • Hard, dense wood
  • Fine, subtle grain
  • Local wood species from sustainable forestry

Why I love beech:
Beech is honest, clear, and timeless. Its light color brings lightness to rooms and allows shapes to clearly emerge. As a native wood, it embodies regionality and sustainability.

Ideal for:
Modern, minimalist sculptures, bright wall objects, Nordic interior design styles

Surface treatment

To preserve and protect the natural beauty of the wood, I use only high-quality, natural oils and waxes:

  • Linseed oil: Emphasizes the grain, penetrates deeply
  • Hard wax oil: Protects the surface, satin gloss
  • Carnauba wax: For particularly elegant, shiny surfaces

This treatment makes the wood resistant to moisture and dirt without losing its natural feel.
